Tree Trimming & Pruning in Tampa Bay

Good pruning keeps a tree healthier, safer and better looking for years. FTDF Services trims oaks, pines and palms across the Tampa Bay area, with a focus on clearing deadwood and weight before storms arrive.

  • Less storm risk from dead and heavy limbs
  • Roof, gutters and pool cage kept clear
  • Healthier structure without topping
  • More light for lawns and gardens
  • All trimmings hauled away

Why Trimming Matters on Florida Trees

Trees here grow almost all year. A live oak can push long, heavy limbs out over a roof or driveway in just a few seasons, and laurel oaks build up dead branches inside the canopy. When a summer squall or tropical storm hits, those are the limbs that break first. Regular pruning reduces that risk and keeps the tree's structure balanced.

Trimming also solves everyday problems: branches scraping the roof and gutters, leaves clogging pool screens, low limbs blocking a driveway, and canopies so dense that grass won't grow underneath. In many cases, a careful trim lets you keep a tree that otherwise would have needed tree removal.

Types of Pruning We Do

  • Deadwood removal. Cutting out dead, broken and hanging branches that could fall without warning.
  • Crown thinning. Selectively removing interior limbs so wind passes through the canopy instead of pushing against it.
  • Crown raising. Lifting low limbs to clear sidewalks, driveways, roofs and lawn areas.
  • Clearance pruning. Cutting limbs back from houses, pool cages and fences.
  • Palm trimming. Removing dead fronds and seed pods from sabal palms and other palms without over-cutting the healthy green fronds.
  • Storm-damage pruning. Cleaning up torn limbs after a storm so wounds can close properly.

We avoid topping trees. Cutting a tree's top off creates weak regrowth that is more likely to fail later.

How the Work Gets Done

Most trimming is done from our bucket truck, which puts the operator right at the branch for clean, controlled cuts. Smaller trees and palms can be pruned from the ground with pole saws or handled with chainsaws once limbs are within reach. Cuts are made just outside the branch collar so the tree can seal the wound naturally.

Branches are dropped into a clear drop zone or lowered with rope when there are structures below. Afterward we gather the limbs, load them on the trailer and blow off driveways and walkways. If you have a big pile of storm debris or old brush in addition to the trimming, our debris removal and brush clean up services can take care of it in the same trip.

Best Time to Trim in the Tampa Area

The months before hurricane season, generally late winter through spring, are a smart time to thin canopies and remove deadwood so trees go into summer lighter and stronger. That said, Florida trees can be trimmed most of the year, and dead or hazardous limbs should be dealt with whenever you spot them. If you live on rural acreage, trimming low pine limbs and clearing debris under trees also ties into fire risk reduction during the dry season.

FAQ

Tree Trimming & Pruning FAQ

How often should trees be trimmed?

Many mature shade trees benefit from pruning every few years, while fast growers near structures may need it more often. Palms usually need dead fronds removed once or twice a year.

Will trimming hurt my oak tree?

Proper pruning doesn't harm a healthy tree. We remove only what's needed, cut at the branch collar and avoid removing too much live canopy at once.

Can you trim branches near power lines?

Limbs touching or near utility lines can be dangerous. Lines running to poles are usually handled by the utility, so we'll let you know what we can safely do and when the utility should be contacted.

Do you trim palm trees?

Yes. We remove dead fronds, seed stalks and old boots, and leave the healthy green fronds in place. Over-trimming palms weakens them.

Is hurricane-season trimming really worth it?

Thinning and deadwood removal before summer reduce the amount of loose and weak wood that storms can break off, which lowers the chance of damage to your home.
