Grapple loader removing a tree while the crew works the root ball

Tree Root Removal in Tampa & the Surrounding Region

Grinding a stump takes care of what you can see, but the roots underneath can still lift slabs, clog drainage and block new construction. We dig out and remove the root system that is causing the problem.

  • Clears the way for slabs, pavers and additions
  • Stops roots from lifting hardscape again
  • Removes sprouting lateral roots
  • Holes backfilled and compacted
  • Honest advice on trees worth saving

When Roots Become the Real Problem

Live oaks, laurel oaks and camphor trees spread roots far beyond their canopy, often just under the surface in Florida's sandy soil. Those roots are what keep a tree standing in a storm, but once the tree is gone, or when it is growing in the wrong place, they turn into an obstacle. People usually call us for root removal when:

  • Surface roots are heaving a driveway, sidewalk, patio or pool deck
  • A planned addition, shed slab or fence line runs straight through an old root zone
  • Roots have grown across a swale or ditch and are trapping sediment
  • A ground stump left behind thick lateral roots that keep sending up sprouts
  • Buried root mats from a cleared lot will interfere with grading or a foundation

If the tree itself is still standing, we start with tree removal and then deal with what is below ground.

Root Removal Versus Stump Grinding

These two services are related but not the same. Stump grinding chews the stump down below grade and leaves most of the root system to decay naturally. That works well for lawns and garden beds. Root removal goes further: we expose and extract the major roots, and for full stump removal we pull the entire root ball. Choose root removal when something needs to be built, paved or dug in that spot, or when roots are actively damaging hardscape or drainage.

How We Get Roots Out

Every job begins with locating utilities. We ask that you call 811 before any digging so buried lines are marked. From there, the approach depends on size and setting:

  • Targeted roots near hardscape: we expose the root by digging alongside it, cut it cleanly with saws, and lift out the section so concrete can be repaired or replaced.
  • Root balls and large stumps: the compact track loader digs around and pries the mass loose, and the wheel loader with log grapple lifts it out.
  • Root mats on cleared land: we rake roots out of the topsoil with the loader so the ground is ready for site preparation and grading.

The stump grinder handles leftover pieces we cannot pull cleanly. Roots and soil clods are loaded into the dump trailer and hauled away, and the hole is backfilled and compacted.

Protecting Trees You Want to Keep

Cutting major roots off a living tree can weaken it and make it more likely to fail in high wind. If roots from a tree you want to keep are causing damage, we will talk through the options before we cut. Sometimes a smaller, targeted cut works; sometimes the honest answer is that the tree and the slab cannot both stay. Your decision, with clear information.

Root Work Across the Tampa Bay Area

We take on single-root driveway repairs for homeowners in older neighborhoods of Tampa and St. Petersburg, where mature oaks line many streets. We also grub roots from building pads for builders and landowners in growing areas like Wesley Chapel. Our service area extends roughly 100 miles from our Tampa base, and estimates are always free.

How it works

Our Process

  1. 1

    Inspection and free estimate

We look at where the roots run, what they are damaging, and whether any trees you want to keep will be affected.

  2. 2

    Utility locate and excavation

After 811 marks buried lines, we dig to expose the roots or work around the root ball with the track loader.

  3. 3

    Cutting and extraction

Roots are cut cleanly and lifted out with the loader and grapple, and the grinder finishes any remaining pieces.

  4. 4

    Backfill and haul-away

We fill and compact the excavation, haul the roots and debris off, and leave the area ready for the next step.

FAQ

Root Removal FAQ

Will removing roots kill my tree?

It can, if large structural roots are cut. Removing a small root far from the trunk is usually tolerated. We will tell you the risk before cutting roots on a tree you want to keep.

Is root removal necessary after stump grinding?

Not always. For a lawn or flower bed, grinding is usually enough. If you plan to pour concrete, set pavers or dig a foundation in that area, removing the roots is the safer choice.

Can you fix the driveway too?

We remove the roots and backfill the area. Concrete or paver repair is done by a hardscape contractor, and we can coordinate timing so the base is ready for them.

Do roots keep growing after a tree is cut?

Some species, including laurel oak and camphor, can push up sprouts from remaining roots. Removing the main laterals reduces that regrowth significantly.

Do you remove roots from cleared land?

Yes. On newly cleared lots and acreage we grub out root mats so the soil can be graded and compacted properly for construction or pasture.
